Unit EQ: Why is it important for you to be "digitally literate"?
LEQ: How well can you Google?
Activating Strategies:
Have students work with a partner to answer the LEQ from yesterday, "How can knowing how to do an advanced search help you find more useful information faster?"
Have some pairs share their responses with the rest of the class.
As a warmup activity, have them do a quick Google search (make it a race) to find th answer to a random fact. For example, you could have them find the answer to "What are those plastic things at the end of shoelaces called?" (They're called aglets). This is to get them thinking about keywords again, and it will hopefully help them with today's lesson.
Teaching Strategies and Distributed Guided Practice/Summarizing Prompts:
Quickly review Google Search Techniques (using Activating Strategy)
Show students how to do a search and limit it to a certain extension (.edu, .gov, etc.). You could tell them that you're doing research about whether wearing uniforms in schools is beneficial and that you want to find answers from schools, so you will use Google to search only sites that end in .edu.
Explain that they are going to try a "Google Search Challenge" today. It will be an independent activity, and it will be challenging...Their job will be to answer a question, and their grade will be based on their accuracy, but ALSO on how well they use Google to search. They will have to keep a record of their search terms on the Google Search Challenge sheet.
